Next fall, Volunteer State Community College students could earn credit hours by helping the Community Mobile Learning Center, a non-profit organization of Trousdale County.
CMLC has asked Vol State's art department to paint a mural on their bus which they will use while visiting different schools.
Sue Mulcahy, professor of art, said the project is just getting started and wants to "create a mobile cultural center."
Mulcahy said she thought they could start on the project during the summer. She said CMLC does not have the bus yet so the class may not be available until Fall.
Mulcahy also wants to class to be available for students to earn credit. The project is not limited to art students.
"Students can get one or two credits. They get to work with a group, learn how to conceive an idea, design the piece, execute the piece, and serve a client," said Mulcahy.
"It's not just personal expression but what the client needs and how to work in a team. It's very much like what professional designers would have to do," she added.
Interested students should contact the art department or humanities division.
Mulcahy said that the class could be offered at the last minute and she will be able to contact students who are interested.
"Even though it is not set in stone yet, it is something students should keep an eye out for," she said.
Volunteers are welcome as well, Mulcahy said.
The project will be time consuming. It will take time to come up with the idea, work it out and figure out how to enlarge it to fit on the bus. Painting it will take a couple of weeks, said Mulcahy.
She is not sure what the painting will be, and is going to leave it up to the students to decide.
"We would have to find out what the client wants it to be like. They would give us some ideas and we would work with those ideas," she said.
CMLC wants something that will catch the eye of people in the community.
