The Volunteer State Community College police department has published the 2007 Annual Report.

The Volunteer State Community College police department has published the 2007 Annual Report.

"The report shows that larceny-theft has decreased since 2005 when there were 27 thefts, in 2006 there were 23 and 2007 there were 21," Chief William Rogan said.

"There has been no record of attempted rape in the past three years, but there was one report of another sex offense", he said. "The arrests have stayed the same from 2006 to 2007 with only one each year."

"In 2007, there were 1,499 traffic citations given", said Rogan.

According to the Vol State handbook, tickets may be given for parking in unauthorized areas such as handicap parking, fire zones, loading and unloading zones, faculty and staff parking areas, and students or employees in visitor parking. Students can also receive tickets for parking on the grass, sidewalks, along painted curbs, and double parking.

According volstate.edu/campuspolice/, the Vol State police department's purpose is establishing and maintaining an atmosphere where people can go safely about their different activities in furtherance of the college's higher education objective.

"The campus police department believes that reducing the combination factors that make crime possible can decrease crime and criminal opportunities," the website states.

"In order for crime to take place, there must be desire, ability, and opportunity," states the website. "The [Vol State] police believes that together with the campus community they can work to identify, prioritize and solve contemporary problems such as crime, drugs, fear of crime, and traffic/parking control."

Volstate.edu/campuspolice/tips offers tips for several different situations to ensure student safety on campus.

If any student or faculty member needs to contact campus police they can call 3911 for an on campus emergency and 3595 for an on campus non-emergency. If the student is calling from a cell phone or they are off campus they can call 230-3595, according to volstate.edu/campuspolice/.

"I feel safe on Vol State's campus and I notice the police driving around in the parking lots and that assures me they are doing a good job", said Rob Jones, a Vol State sophomore.
