The prices in the cafeteria have recently increased.

From the Manager's Special to sodas to items "Hot off the Grill," prices have been raised all around.

Although the increases may seem small, it all adds up and can have a very negative effect on students.

Most students are on limited budgets and one can be certain that Vol State students are no exception.

Even vending machine prices have been raised.

Vending machine drinks on campus used to cost $1.25, but are now $1.35.

That's simply ridiculous.

Why the sudden increase?

The cafeteria has a monopoly of sorts on the students of Vol State.

It's conveniently located on campus as most students don't have time to drive somewhere for a quick bite to eat.

The food doesn't even taste that great and the menu is repetitive.

Students would be better served to drive across the street to one of the many fast food or sit-down restaurants.

Varying on the eatery selected, the price may be more or less than Vol State's cafeteria, but at least the quality of food would match the price.

Something has got to give.

The Settler isn't alone in this idea.

The "Your Thoughts" segment on page 10 in this week's Settler attests to students true feelings regarding the cafeteria.

Perhaps if Vol State would bring another food choice to campus, such as a fast food kiosk, that would be enough incentive to make the cafeteria step up its game.

Plus, students wouldn't get bored with the cafeteria menu if they had another convenient choice. Maybe food would start tasting better and pricing would be competitive.

The cafeteria serves its purpose by providing food on Vol State's campus, but the bottom line is that the prices don't match up with the quality.
