The Volunteer State Community College softball team is getting better with every game played.

On Wednesday, the Lady Pioneers played a double-header against the Lady Generals of Jackson State Community College. The Lady Pioneers won the first game by a score of 3-0.

Freshman pitcher Leah Hensley had a good outing. She gave up zero runs in seven innings of work.

"They did not hit a ball hard off of her all day and she only gave up three hits," said Head Coach Johnny Lynn.

Hensley's change-up was really throwing the Jackson state hitters off.

"She has worked really hard on that change-up all winter, and it makes her fastball look that much faster," said Lynn.

She finished the day with four strikeouts.

The Lady Pioneers won the second game by a score of 5-4. They rallied in the bottom of the seventh inning and scored two runs to seize the victory.

That makes four in a row for the Lady Pioneers and they are now 2-0 in conference play with an overall record of 10-8.

Sophomore pitcher Abby Mabry struck out eight hitters, gave up only two hits, and only one earned run and got her forth win of the year.

One problem for the team has been consistency.

"Anytime you have a young team you will struggle with consistency early in the year. Coach Lynn is bringing them along with each game," said Athletic Director Bobby Hudson.

This Friday the Lady Pioneers will face the number three ranked Lady Tigers of Chattanooga State Technical Community College. The game will be at home at 2 p.m.

"It will be a good experience and my players will be pumped for it," said Lynn.
