Volunteer State Community College theatre students will present the play "Electra" at the Palace Theater, 112 Public Square, in Gallatin on April 4 and 5 at 7:30 p.m. and April 6 at 2:30 p.m..
The play will be directed by Edmon Thomas, associate professor of communications and theatre, and stars Johnna Malbrough as Chrysothemis, Daron Martel as Orestes, Irelyn Morris as Electra, and Lizbeth Norton as the queen.
"'Electra' is an ancient Greek tragedy by Sophocles. Now, it has been updated for modern sensibilities by Irish playwright, Frank McGuiness," according to www.volstate.edu/stories/electra. The website goes on to say that McGuiness' version of "Electra" uses modern language so that the audience can better understand the account.
Morris said her character wants to "avenge her father" after he is murdered by Electra's mother and step-father, the king.
Morris said that she "read [the script] and tried to imagine how she would feel if that happened to her," in order to "get into" her role.
She also said that, outside of practice on campus, she reads over her lines and rehearses on her own three to four hours a night.
As the ten cast members rehearsed last week, Thomas directed each character as they read through their lines.
He directed them how to move on stage, helped each actor know what emotion to portray, and suggested how to portray it.
He also gave instruction for working around the props and scenery that will be on the stage in the theatre as they were rehearsing a bare, open classroom.
Open auditions took place for each part, said Thomas. He also said that the actors have been rehearsing for three weeks, and by the time the show opens, they will have been rehearsing for a month.
"Good acting, and a story about revenge," said Thomas of what the audience could expect from the play.
Thomas also said that the play should last about an hour and a half with no intermission.
Also according to www.volstate.edu/stories/electra, donations to fund student scholarships will be accepted at the door.
