Volunteer State Community College will be hosting a severe weather seminar conducted by Channel 4's Pinpoint Weather meteorologist team and Snowbird.
"The meteorologists will be talking about the storms we have had these past months," said Coordinator of Public Relation Eric Melcher. "They will explain what happens in nature and how storms form."
Channel 4's meteorologists will also be talking about what things a person should do to improve their own safety, Melcher said.
"This seminar is a good opportunity not only for students, but the community as well to understand our weather and also how Channel 4's weather team works," he continued.
"Students should definitely attend this seminar," said Vol State student Sarah Williams. "You never know how weather can affect you."
Williams also said that her parents' house was hit by last month's tornado in Macon County.
"[My parents] are safe, but the home was severely damaged," Williams added.
When asked why Channel 4 decided to conduct the event at Vol State, meteorologist Dan Thomas said our school was the ideal place to do this type of event especially after been hit by a tornado two years ago.
"We were looking for a location in Sumner County that was hit by the tornado," said Thomas. "Vol State just recovered from one and has a large field house with a good community around it."
Thomas said that the seminar's main goals are to educate the community in severe weather security. He also said the team will explain several ways to stay safe inside and outside the home.
"The seminar's most important goal is to promote awareness in people," Thomas said. "We want this seminar to reach everybody."
There will be some free gifts like severe weather tips and share weather jokes, Thomas added.
"We want to promote safety with entertainment," he said. "This event allows all the audience to have fun while learning."
Channel's 4's Pinpoint Weather team and Snowbird will in charge of conducting the event, Thomas continued.
