The Volunteer State Community College softball team is off to an unexpected start.
Coming into the season there were many questions about the team's age, since they only have three sophomores. Experienced players were hard to come by.
After losing its first two games, they have won four in a row and brought its record to 4-2.
On March 10, the Lady Pioneers took on the Warriors of Lend Lake College from Illinois. The Lady Pioneers won the first game 6-2.
Sophomore pitcher Abby Mabry started the game and pitched well. Her record is now 1-1 on the season.
The Lady Pioneers won the second game of the double-header by a score of 4-3, but the victory did not come easy.
In the first inning, Lend Lake rushed out to a two run lead. Then the Lady Pioneers came back in the bottom of the fourth inning to tie the score up 3-3, and in a dramatic fashion, scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning to get the victory.
With such a young team, how has Vol State gotten out to such a good start?
"They are very young and I think every game they will get better and better," said Athletic Director Bobby Hudson.
Good coaching is another reason for the Lady Pioneers early-season success.
"Coach Johnny Lynn did a great job of getting them prepared to start the season. I think our softball team is working very hard," said Hudson.
Another concern for the team this season was the unpredictable weather and lack of preparation because of it.
"The weather has been so crazy, I know they were ready to get started," said Hudson.
The Lady Pioneers were scheduled to travel to Hanceville, Ala. for the Wallace State Softball Tournament last weekend.
The next home game for Vol State will be March 19 at 1 p.m.
