Volunteer State Community College students can obtain assistance in writing papers from the Language Center, which is located in suite 157 of the Hal Reed Ramer Administration Building, according to www.volstate.edu/languagecenter/.

Laura Black, Language Center director, said the main objection of the Language Center is to help students become better writers in their classes.

"Students need help because they are rusty in their writing skills or they do not have a lot of practice in writing papers," she continued. "Many students have problems with focus and unity in their papers. This causes students to have problems with grammar, punctuation, and mechanics of the paper."

According to the website, resources available in the Language center include "qualified writing assistants for one on one tutoring," computers with Microsoft Office and internet access, scanners, grammar handbooks, style manuals, software to assist with planning papers, and English grammar software, according to the website.

The website states that when students go to the Language Center for help, they should bring their assignment guidelines, any work already completed for the assignment, related class notes, copies of sources, and a USB storage device.

Student Allie Sawyer said that she likes how the Language Center helps to develop the structure of her paper. She said all her papers turn out better and she makes better grades than she would by herself.

The satisfaction of seeing the progress that students make in their writing skills from the time they begin their college career to graduation is rewarding, Black said.

Black also said that she recommends that students get to the Language Center early in the semester in order to maximize the potential of getting a better grade.

Also according to the Language Center's website, regular hours of operation are Monday 8 a.m.-6 p.m., Tuesday 8 a.m.-5 p.m., Wednesday 8 a.m.-6 p.m., Thursday 8 a.m.-5p.m., Friday 8 a.m.-2 p.m., and on a trial basis, Saturday 10 a.m.-2 p.m.
