Volunteer State Community College's Student Government Association elections are scheduled to take place in the hallway in front of the Student Services office of the Randy and Lois Wood Campus Center on March 24 and 25.
Current SGA President De'Wayne Carter said the only presidential candidate is current SGA Secretary of Treasury, Lindsey Overhalser.
According to the SGA Constitution, the president shall represent all currently enrolled on and off campus Vol State students with an earnest effort to seek input from and foster respect for all students irrespective of race, creed, color, age, gender or other characteristics of diversity.
The president shall also dedicate a minimum of five hours per week to SGA office hours, the constitution also states.
Another function of the president is to appoint a secretary of the state, an attorney general, a secretary of treasury, and a secretary of communications.
When asked why it is important for Vol State's students to vote in this election, Carter said that it is important to participate in electing someone that will serve as representative of the student body.
"The president is a link between the administration and students," Carter said. "You definitely want a person who is not afraid to stand up for you as student."
Carter also said a president should be an approachable person willing to work hard for students.
"I would want someone that loves Vol State and carries SGA's great tradition of good leadership to be elected as a president," Carted added.
According to www2.volstate.edu/sga, the SGA helps to promote students' rights and responsibilities and to promote cooperation between students, faculty, and the administration.
The SGA also passes legislation to regulate the way that this body functions, also to regulate the clubs and organizations on campus, and to aid students on campus, the website states.
The position for vice-president should also be decided by Vol State students. However, there is no one running for this or any other position, said Coordinator of Students
Activities Gina Garera.
The vice-president shall server as a leader of the senate, serve on the president's cabinet and become the interim president of the SGA in the event the office of the president becomes vacant before the end of the president's term of office, the SGA constitution states.
Any person who is registered in one or more Vol State classes is deemed a student and will be eligible to vote, the constitution continues. Students shall vote for individual candidates and not for a slate of candidates, the constitution empathizes.
