All students at Volunteer State Community College pay an International Educational Fee each semester.

The $10 per student fee is used in three broad areas which are funding assistance for student travel, internationalization of the curriculum, and support from development in internationalization efforts said Dr. John Espey, academic dean of the business division and chairman of the international education committee.

"All funds are requested through and must be approved by the international education committee. That committee is appointed by the president and membership includes a cross section of college offices and divisions," said Espey.

"We have encouraged faculty to encourage students in Tennessee Consortium for International Studies travel study interest to make application to TnCIS if in financial need, to apply to the committee for assistance," said Espey.

"I really enjoy traveling and I think that this fee is worth the money because it opens up many opportunities for students here at Vol State," said Vol State freshman and Mt. Juliet resident Bridgett Walker.

"March 12 through 14 we shall have a speakers program on campus with five international experts speaking with the college community. These experts are faculty from regional universities who are natives of other countries and have had expertise in each respective region of the world," Espey said.

"The entire cost of this program will be paid with the international educational fee," Epsey continued.

"International educational funds will not be used to provide travel and scholarship for foreign students traveling to the US. Also, funds will not be approved to finance third party travel only programs offered to students by for-profit companies. There must be formal study involved with any student travel and colleges, universities and consortiums offer the best opportunities," noted Espey.

"We have other ideas in process for international education, curriculum expansion and activities. We certainly welcome any suggestions, student participation and ideas on international education initiatives," said Espey.
