Vol State is scheduled to host a blood drive on Feb. 26 in the Rochelle Center from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

According to givelife2.org, every two seconds someone in America needs blood.

Transfusions are needed for trauma victims, heart surgery, organ transplants, newborn or premature babies, patients receiving treatment for leukemia and other diseases, and emergencies.

The donated blood is broken up into different components such as red blood cells, plasma and platelets. It is distributed to patients according to their needs.

In 2001, hospitals alone needed 14 million units of blood for transfusions. According to givelife2.org, that is 38,000 units of blood a day.

There is an increasing rate of six percent per year for needed blood.

When a natural disaster occurs, such as a tornado, this rate can change.

One donation from you could save at least three lives.

The average adult body has 10 to 12 pints of blood. When donating, the American Red Cross will take one pint of blood.

We can afford to spare one pint of blood to save three lives.

All blood types are needed. Common blood types are needed because more patients will need the blood. Rare blood types are needed because there are fewer donors.

It is important to donate blood no matter what type you have.

After having the tornado hit so close to home this year, and in 2006, students should be eager to donate blood.

It takes about seven to ten minutes to give a pint of blood.

In the time it takes you to read this, several Americans needed blood.

You could be someone who took the time to donate and in the end, you saved a life or even three.
