The luncheon honors Volunteer State Community College students, staff and faculty who are involved in minority work affairs.
The Minority Community Leadership award is presented to minority students, faculty and staff who are active at Vol State or in the community, said Dr. Monique Wright, director of student life and diversity initiatives.
Winners are nominated by students and faculty, she continued.
This year's winners were students Leslie Aluoch and Barbara Jackson, Advising Counselor Terry Bubb and Professor of Spanish and English and Chair of Foreign Language Dr. Jaime Sanchez. Students De'Wayne Carter and Natasha Brooks received honorable mention.
Jackson said she was pleasantly surprised about getting this award.
Jackson also said that she was glad to see that her hard work did not go unnoticed and that it was about her love for people and not about getting recognition.
"Four years ago, I made a promise to God to get a higher education and take excuses out of my vocabulary. I can always retake a class but at least I can say I gave it my all," said Jackson. "I stay up some nights up to three or four in the morning re-reading the material to understand it."
Jackson said that is the secretary for the African American Student Union and also serves on the executive council of the Student Government Association.
She said she is a grandmother, mother and full time student as part of the regular responsibilities of her daily life.
"Anything worth having is worth working for. If something is given to you it can be taken from you, but if you work for it, it cannot be taken from you," Jackson said.
Sanchez said he was greatly surprised and found it to be very rewarding.
Bubb said he was stunned and found the acknowledgement to be nice.
Both Bubb and Sanchez have spent time working with the local Hispanic community in raising interest in going to college. They started with a Spanish web site and then it moved forward.
They now have a group called the Sumner County Hispanic Alliance.
Bubb and Sanchez were involved in this year's Hispanic Family Education Night which took place on Tuesday night. At this year's Hispanic Family Education Night, there were approximately 100 people in attendance while there was around 30 people at last year's event.
Another Hispanic Family Education Night is planned to take place at the Madison Church of Christ on April 15.
