Every semester students are required to pay tuition at Volunteer State Community College. One fee paid by students is the activity fee.

According to Vol State's 2007-08 catalog, "the purpose of the student activity fee is to provide and promote programs for all members of the student body, both on and off campus. It will be used for student projects, student activities, and student leadership scholarships."

All students who are signed up for credit courses at Vol State are required to pay the $3 activity fee, said Dr. Monique Wright, director of student life and diversity initiatives.

College Goal Sunday, Hispanic Family Education Night and Transfer Day are among events that the fee helps to fund.

An upcoming event that the activity fee helps to fund is Think Fast.

Think Fast is a trivia game show in which students will have a chance to win cash as well as other prizes.

The event will take place on Feb. 27 at 12:15 p.m. in the cafeteria.

Some teachers use events as extra-credit opportunities for their students.

Associate Professor of Psychology and Education Patsy Lawson offers different opportunities throughout the semester so that her students can earn extra-credit points.

"I need a few extra points for my history class, so I am going to an event on campus this Monday," said sophomore Lauren Whitaker.

Also according to the 2007-08 catalog, a calendar of events for each semester is available to every student.

The calendar is also available at www.volstate.edu.
