Volunteer State Community College's chapter of Phi Theta Kappa is an organization for students that meets Thursdays in the Jim Moore Conference Room.
PTK is only open to those invited to join.
In order to be eligible, students must have a grade point average of at least 3.5 and have earned 15 or more credit hours, said Dr. Monique Wright, director of student life and diversity initiatives.
Prospective members will then be asked to complete an application and pay $65. There is also an induction ceremony, she said.
"We typically have five to 10 students at a meeting, but others support the events and programs that we sponsor," Wright continued.
According to the organization's constitution, the purpose of the PTK shall be to recognize and encourage scholarship
among two-year college students.
To achieve this purpose, PTK shall provide opportunities for the development of leadership and service, for an intellectual climate for exchange of ideas and ideals, for lively fellowship for scholars, and for stimulation of interest in continuing academic excellence.
According to VolunteerStateCommunityCollege.blogspot.com, in joint effort with Gallatin High School, PTK is collecting donations to send to U.S. troops. Donations should be dropped off in the Thigpen Library by Feb. 14.
According to the website, items being collected are deodorant, toothpaste, toothbrushes, books, AA batteries, pens, baby wipes, hand sanitizer, hand sized towels, powdered drink mix, individual size bags of potato chips, and hard candy.
Sun block, lotion, baby powder, tea bags, bubble gum, microwave popcorn, canned soup, canned tuna, canned chicken, fast-food condiments, packages of socks, lip balm, combs, brushes, stationary, disposable cameras, baseball hats, instant coffee, and small stuffed animals are also being collected.
Last year, Vol State's chapter of PTK received the Tennessee Region Chapter of Light and also five star status.
According to PTK.org/fivestar/07_guide.pdf, among other qualifications to achieve five-star status, the chapter must implement one additional honors study topic project.
Also according to the website, the chapter must implement one additional international service program project.
