Admissions Advisor Heather Harper said that staff members from Vol State go to HLHS once a month to help the students there become more knowledgeable about college.
She also said that even though the college is conducting the program, it is not just a recruiting tool for Vol State.
"To increase awareness of higher education," said Harper of the main reason for the program.
According to the Adopt-A-School tentative monthly schedule, events hosted by Vol State for HLHS include career planning, college planning, financial aid seminars, campus tours, life skills, goal setting, study and test taking skills.
Students from HLHS were on Vol State's campus this semester for campus tours and to participate in Unity Day.
"It's a partnership," said Harper as she described the relationship between the staff of HLHS and Vol State.
Director of Student Life and Diversity Initiatives, Dr. Monique Wright, said that while Vol State is currently only working with HLHS, they do wish to branch out and work with more high schools.
"Vol State wants to work with K-12 to make sure that college attendance is available to everyone who wants it," said Dr. Wright.
