Approximately 7,000 students attend Volunteer State Community College.

The Settler polled 266 current Vol State students to see where they stand in the 2008 Presidential Election.

Ron Paul leads the republican voters while Barack Obama is in the lead for the democrats.

The survey didn't only ask who students were voting for, but also asked how well they followed national and political news, what change they want to see in America, what party they classify themselves with, what they feel the most important political issue is, who they would never vote for, and if they are voting in the primary on Feb. 5.

Both Paul's and Obama's voters follow national and political news either "very well" or "somewhat."

Most of the students who chose Paul and Obama said they want to see major reform in the United States of America while some would be satisfied with some change.

The majority of students who voted for Obama classified themselves as democrats. Paul's voters' party classification varied between republican, libertarian and independent.

Hillary Clinton was overwhelmingly selected, even by voters from her own party, as the candidate that students would never vote for.

Obama received the majority of 30-year-old and older voters with Clinton in second and John McCain in third.

Those polled indicated that "budget and economy" and "the war in Iraq" are the most important issues in this election. Other important issues indicated by students were foreign policy, energy and oil, education, and immigration.

Only 47 students polled said that they are not voting in the primary. Most were in the age group of 18-24. They tended to not follow national and political news. They also think some change should happen in America. Even though they aren't voting most would never vote for Clinton or Obama.
