According to the AASU constitution, the purpose of the organization is to "promote black awareness to everyone young and old."
The AASU hosts three events a year.
The first is Unity Day. This year's Unity Day highlighted the works of the civil rights movement in the United States.
The second event is a Halloween party for students, faculty and staff.
The third event is the Soul Food Luncheon. This year's Soul Food Luncheon will be Feb. 20 from 12:15 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the Rochelle Conference Center.
The Soul Food Luncheon is a time for food and fellowship while promoting African American history and culture.
Dr. Jeff Menzise of Fisk University is scheduled to be speaking as well.
"I became an active member because I wanted to feel like a college student," said Patrick Shelton, AASU president. "I did not want to attend class and then go home. I know so many students that do just that. I wanted feel like I was at a college and there's no better way to do that than to join a student organization."
"I decided to become a member because I wanted to make a difference in lives of the students at Vol State," said Barbara Jackson, AASU secretary. "It is all about Vol State and the students."
The AASU constitution states that any student with a valid identification card is eligible to be a member of the organization.
