It's hard to believe that the holiday season is here already, but once again we find ourselves on the brink of a two month escapade of family get-togethers, decorations and gifts.
This time of year usually brings out a generous attitude in most people and there is a multitude of opportunities to help those who are less fortunate.
Helping those who are struggling financially not only brightens someone else's holiday season, but it also fills the giver with a feeling of accomplishment.
Simply giving of yourself, whether be it time or money, just feels good at times.
Unfortunately, the holiday season is the only time that some people volunteer or donate money to a charity.
Many charities are often flooded with volunteers during the holiday season, sometimes to an extent where they have to turn volunteers away.
Yet, during other times of the year, some charitiy organizations barely have enough volunteers to operate.
In reality, those who are less fortunate aren't only struggling during the holidays, but all year long.
It's funny how easily we tend to forget about the homeless and those less fortunate than ourselves as soon as January rolls around.
Some feel that a contribution of time or money at Christmas time enough of a good deed to last all year long.
We at The Settler are not by any means trying to be the Grinch of Vol State by criticizing volunteering during the holidays.

There are many wonderful charities that take place during this time of year and those very charities meet the needs of our community members.
For example, Christmas for the Kids, which is currently being sponsored by SGA, is a charity that helps to provide gifts for children who otherwise wouldn't receive many, or any at all.
It is very important for charities such as Christmas for the Kids to have volunteers so that they can be successful in their mission of brightening someone's holiday season.
The Settler would like to encourage everyone to volunteer all year long rather than just during the holidays.
