BULLETIN: IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO REGISTER TO RECEIVE EMERGENCY MESSAGES OR E-MAIL, PLEASE VISIT: http://volstate.edu/txt.html (click on link at bottom of this story).

The message can be sent to a designated e-mail address, PDA or pager.

"The system will add another immediate mechanism to the existing methods that the College has in place to alert the community to an emergency situation. The system will be used only for emergency contact purposes. This system will not be used to distribute advertising or other unsolicited content," according to an email sent by Kenyatta Lovett, director of public relations.

Students, faculty and staff at Volunteer State can NOW receive text messaging updates on their cell phones.

Students can receive the alerts by phone or by email. Not only can students get updates about campus emergencies, but they can also get updates about financial aid, sports updates, severe weather, campus closings, and messages from certain departments.

"We just want to make sure the campus is safe," said Lovett.

Students will need to make an account by providing their email address, and cell phone number.

Vol State is not the only school in Tennessee to have campus text messaging alerts.

Middle Tennessee State University and University of Tennessee Chattanooga also have text alerts.

The alerts will be sent to public relations and then to campus police and Vol State President Dr. Warren Nichols. They will then decide to send out the texts.
Students that have signed up for alerts can choose which alerts they want to receive.

Faculty can also receive alerts too.
If you have any question about the text messaging alerts, contact Kenyatta Lovett or campus police.
