Day care is an issue which is being addressed here at Volunteer State Community College, by the Child Care Ad Hoc Committee that includes faculty, students, and staff members.
This committee was formed this semester.
According to Emily short, who submitted the minutes, The Oct. 8th meeting was when they discussed their early stages of development, such as where the day care would be located, what would the requirements be.
"We have just gathered a lot of information," stated Coordinator of Off-Campus Sites Shanna Jackson.
According to the minutes of the Oct.8th meeting, initially Vol state's zoning permit did not allow for a child care facility.
The zoning has been tailored so that it is now zoned for a child care center.
This was done based on the fact that the college is an educational institution therefore, it would benefit from the care center.
"Nothing in the Board of Regents states that we could not have an on campus day care," stated Jackson.
The committee also discussed where the possible funding would come from.
"We are looking into grants," said Jackson. "The next step is to determine whether we need one on campus."
The Child Care Ad Hoc Committee will be handing out a survey that will determine the need and the requirements of the day care.
This survey will be coming soon hopefully by the end of this semester, or the beginning of the spring term said Jackson.
"It is just a matter of timing and who we are giving it to," stated Jackson.
"We are just so early in the stages," she added. "I diffidently think that we are heading in the right direction," continued.
