Scism was one of four finalists that toured campus last month.
While on campus, Scism talked of the importance of keeping class sizes small, embracing different cultures and keeping a student voice in committees that make decisions for the college.
"We're excited about what Dr. Scism has done during his career and what he can help us accomplish here at Vol State," said Nichols in a press release.
Scism is currently serving as the chief academic officer at Lee College in Baytown, Texas.
He states that his responsibilities there include overseeing academic affairs such as transfer, technical/vocational studies, and workforce assistance.
Scism is also Lee College's representative to the Houston P-16+ council.
According to its website, the Houston P-16+ council's mission is "to promote success across the education continuum, pre-kindergarten through college and workforce development, for children and young adults in the Gulf Coast area through the broadest collaboration of institutions and organizations and to serve as a model for the state of Texas."
"During his time at Lee College, Dr. Scism has been instrumental in developing and implementing general education core learning course outcomes, developing an [English to speakers of other languages] program, and restructuring developmental education," Nichols said in a e-mail sent to Vol State email users.
According to a Vol State press release, before his tenure at Vol State begins, Scism will be traveling to Vietnam to establish an international education partnership between Lee College and Saigon Tech.
Jim Hiett, interim vice president of academic affairs, said he expects to return to his former position once Scism begins.
Hiett was formerly the assistant vice president for academic affairs.
"I am looking forward to [returning to my former position], and I'm looking forward to [Scism] coming," said Hiett.
Hiett said that although he was not on the committee that chose Scism, he thinks that the committee made the right decision.
"Dr. Scism has done well in the past, and will continue to do well," Hiett stated. "Students should look forward to someone coming who has so much experience at the community college level," Hiett continued.
"I'm interested in the initiatives Volunteer State is engaged in, and I'm really looking forward to the future," said Scism in a press release.
