Dr. Rick Parrent, director of career placement and cooperative education, resigned from his position at Volunteer State Community College on Sept. 28.

Parrent said he had a great opportunity for a different job which is why he chose to leave Vol State. He was to begin his new position Oct.1.

Parrent was absent a total of two business days before returning to Vol State last Wednesday.

"I'm not going to comment about any of that," said Parrent when asked why he returned.

According to Vol State's Director of Human Resources, Helen Anderson, Parrent's position was not going to be filled by an interim director. The position would have remained empty until a new director was named.

Dr. Jim Hiett, interim assistant vice president for academic affairs, declined to comment when asked why Parrent's position was not going to be filled by an interim director.

Hiett said that Parrent's position is important in helping students be successful.

"[Dr. Parrent] is dynamite," added Hiett. "He's among the top professionals in the country. I've never heard anything bad about him."

Hiett declined to comment about Parrent's two-day absence and reason for return.
