Spam is an annoying commercial message posted on a computer network or sent as an e-mail.
According to Volunteer State Community College student James Swafford, spam is a real problem at Vol State.
"A lot of people that I talk too can't get their e-mail to even work," says Swafford.
Swafford recounted his first experience with Vol State's newest e-mail system.
"The very first time I tried to even use my new e-mail account there was an e-mail from a so called aristocrat that wanted me to get some money out of some bank and wire it to him in Britain. He didn't even spell Britain right," said Swafford.
Swafford expressed his discontent with the college by saying "I thought they would have plenty of security to protect us from this stuff happening, but they don't."
Online Vol State student Jenny Creel claimed to have trouble registering and opening her e-mail on the new system.
"I haven't been to school in over 10 years, it's a little intimidating when the registration system and the e-mail system doesn't work right. I'm only taking one class this semester because of all the trouble I had on the computer," Creel said.
"There will always be spam as there is not a filter that will stop it all. We have recently implemented a new spam filter that should show some improvements in how much you receive in your mailbox," said Stephanie Coker, associate director of the administrative computer services department.
"The problem last year was that many students did not use the options menu inside Microsoft Outlook Web Access to activate their spam filter. This year the filtering is being done on an email gateway outside of the mail system which will prevent the need for that set-up. However, some spam will still get through and everyone will still need to monitor their email and delete all items they do not want or need to keep their mailbox from filling up," Coker also said.
