Volunteer State Community College's newspaper, The Settler, is proud to announce that it has a new website this semester.
According to Clay Scott, faculty sponsor of The Settler, the old website only allowed for the paper to be published online in PDF format which did not allow for a "true online product." Scott is excited about the new site, Settleronline.com, which allows news to be posted 24/7 without having to wait for the print version of The Settler.
"With this capability, readers can log on 24/7 and get the latest news about the Volunteer State community," said Scott. "Another nice thing is that the staff can update the site from any computer anywhere in the world. If the systems go down on campus, the staff can still provide readers with the latest Vol State news."
Scott also added that Settleronline.com, which is hosted by College Publisher, allows for many forms of media to work together including photo slideshows, video capabilities, message boards, reader polls, pod casts and more.
Editor of The Settler, Rob Spires, emphasized the importance of a website which is capable of joining several types of media.
"As the different media outlets continue to converge, it was important that we found a program that helped students understand the necessity of bringing the different forms of media together for a stronger online presence," said Spires.
Scott also mentioned that along with the various forms of media which are represented on Settleronline.com, readers will be able to comment on news stories, view statistics which show the most read and e-mailed articles, have access to a calendar of campus events and also read stories which are featured on national college newspaper sites.
Aside from the limitless media features found on the new website, Settleronline.com also offers more professional appearance.
"Students will notice a whole new, more professional look to the website," said Spires. "The new website is more in line with the style most other newspapers across the country are using for their websites."
Spires is not anticipating any problems with the new website as it is not an entirely new program and is used by several other colleges nationwide.
Scott and Spires would like to encourage readers to visit Settleronline.com frequently as it will be updated regularly and to also participate in the interactive features.
"The Settler is always looking for staff members, no experience required," added Scott. "I would encourage anyone who wants to get in on the cutting edge of media to join The Settler staff and help us create an excellent print and online news source for the Vol State community…the possibilities are limitless."
