Volunteer State Community College has not had a cheerleading squad since it came back for a year in 2004. Before 2004, the squad had not been active since the 70s. Now, the team is back. This year, there are thirteen girls on the squad. Members include, Alicia Witt, the captain, Victoria Pedem, the co-captain, Trelonda Scruggs, Paige Alexander, Hailey Howland, Bethany Brooks, Ashley Winfrey, Andrea Price, Marissa Woods, Marcaela Hendricks, Sarah Townsend, Ashley Loftis, and Elizabeth Pride. Coach Bobby Hudson is the advisor this year. There were no tryouts because no one really knew, to have actual tryouts would have required girls that they didn't have at the time.
Ladies and gentlemen, we are once again privileged to have an operational theater at Volunteer State Community College. The first production to grace the stage since its reopening was "Lend Me a Tenor." I attended the Friday night performance on Nov. 15 with the intention of reviewing my fellow students. The comedy was incredibly well directed. The punch lines were delivered by the cast with ease and veteran timing. The audience responded well at the appropriate times and seemed very pleased by the performance.
Since he was 11 years old, Steven Phillips has been playing the drums. A music major and drummer for the Commercial Music Ensemble, much of Phillips's time is dedicated to the instrument. Originally he started playing because, "It just looked cooler than everything else in music. It always seemed like in school that girls like drummers, so that was a place I needed to be," he explained sarcastically. When he was younger, he was a big fan of Dave Grohl and Jimmy Chamberlin and cites both as big influences.
