The Student Government Association, along with other student organizations at Volunteer State Community College, will sponsor the annual Christmas for the Kids (CFTK) event on Saturday, Dec. 7, in the Tiled Dining Room in the Wood Campus Center from 2-4 p.m.
According to the Office of Student Life and Diversity Initiatives, the event is designed to help the children of Vol State students, age 12 and younger, whose families are experiencing significant financial hardship during this holiday season.
“I think this is a wonderful program.
“Some of my fondest childhood memories surround Christmas morning.
“The holiday is all about giving, and as members of the Vol State community we have the ability to take care of each other.
“I encourage everyone to participate.
“There really is no better feeling than helping others,” said Amber Ruedemann, Vol State student.
There are similar programs around the nation. CFTK however, is exclusively for the Vol State community.
“My husband lost his job a few years ago, right before the holiday season.
“We really could not afford to buy gifts for my children. It really hurt me in a deep way.
“I can honestly say, if it weren’t for Christmas for the Kids, that Christmas season would have been the hardest time in my life.
“I sincerely want to thank Vol State for continuing to offer this to its students. I really hope people take the opportunity to donate and volunteer.
“It makes a huge difference in people’s lives,” said Haylee Jeffries, former Vol State student.
The CFTK party will have games for children to play, light refreshments and a visit from Mr. and Mrs. Claus.
There are spots available for families in need, as well as volunteer opportunities.
“CFTK is for VSCC students and their children who are in need during the holiday season.
“Students can go by the Office of Student Life and Diversity Initiatives in Wood 215 and fill out an application by Nov. 15 to have their children’s names placed on the tree.
“Those names will be collected and gifts will be bought for them.
“CFTK is a great way for the VSCC family to give back to the children of VSCC students.
“We have a great team serving on the committee this year and I know the whole process will be a success from beginning to end,” said Jacob Young, committee chair for CFTK.
